学術振興会の研究拠点事業の一環として、アフリカ（コンゴ民主共和国、ケニア、ナイジェリア、ルワンダ）の研究者9名が11月30日～12月2日の3日間、山岡研究室に滞在し、2人の日本人招待研究者とともに、ヘリコバクター共同研究に関する研究会を行いました。合わせて大分大学病院施設見学、基礎研究室訪問などを行いました。 As part of Core to Core Program Asia-Africa Platforms (JSPS), 9 african researchers from DR Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, visited Yamaoka Lab from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2, 2017 to attend the 1st meeting for Collaborative Research on Helicobacter pylori between Oita University and Afrca, with 2 invited Japanese researchers. They also had activities to visit Oita University Hospital and basic researh laboratories.

Approximately 30 participants attended the meeting. Attendees were freely invited.
Welcome:
The meeting commenced shortly after 5.30 pm at the Medium conference room, with a welcome address by Professor Yoshio Yamaoka (Chairman, Department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, Oita University Faculty of Medicine) who chaired the meeting. Professor Yamaoka gave an overview of the Core-to-core Program for collaborative research on H. pylori between Africa and Japan, the history; aim and expected results of the Program. He paid special thanks to the funders of the Japan-Africa Project and highlighted the strides attempted to be made over the 3 next years. Professor Yamaoka also introduced the countries which were attending this first meeting of the Japan-Africa Collaborative Project on H. pylori.
Presentations:
Presentations were divided into four sessions. The first day's presentations were devoted to the first session related to the experience gained by Professor Yamaoka's team from research on the molecular epidemiology of H. pylori infection in Asian countries.
1. "Molecular epidemiology of H. pylori infection - Experience gained from Asian countries" - Professor Yoshio Yamaoka (Professor, Department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, Oita University Faculty of Medicine)
2. "H. pylori genetics and human migration in East Asia" - Dr. Rumiko Suzuki
(Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, Oita University Faculty of Medicine)
3. "Prevalence and genotypes of Helicobacter pylori in Thailand" - Phawinee Subsomwong (PhD student, Department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, Oita University Faculty of Medicine)
The second day was devoted to the second and third sessions. The second session introduced to participants the current status on gasrtoduodenal diseases, especially diseases related to H. pylori, within African countries. The third session was made by presentations on translational research between Japan and Africa on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) and other infectious diseases. Before making presentations, further introductions of participants were made, welcoming and acknowledging others attendees including invited guests.

5. "Current status of Gastric Cancer and H. pylori infection in Kenya and the region" - Professor Gunturu Revathi (Head of Microbiology, Department of Pathology, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi Kenya)
6. "Health Research: Kisii county's untapped potential" - Dr. Mounde Mokaya (Deputy Director in charge of clinical services department of health services - Kisii county, Kenya)
7. "Current status on Gastric cancer and H. pylori infection in Nigeria" - Professor Oluwasola Oliwayola (Department of Pathology, University of Ibadan & University College Hospital Ibadan)
8. "Collaboration between KEMRI and Kanazawa University since 1999" - Professor Hiroshi Ichimura (Chairman, Department of Viral Infection and International Health, Institute of Medical, Pharmaceutical, and Health Sciences, Kanazawa University)
9. "Development a multiplex assay for simultaneous detection of filarial infections Filariasis multiplex project: a collaborative research between Nagasaki University and the University of Kinshasa" - Dr. Yombo Kalenda Dan Justin (Nagasaki University, School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health)
10. "HIV/AIDS Trends in Japan" - Dr. Tadashi Kikuchi (IMSUT Hospital, Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo)
The third and last day, the guests from Africa moved to Nagasaki city. In Nagasaki, scientific activities conducted consisted of further presentations. Thus session introduced to participants the current status on gasrtoduodenal diseases in Africa, was completed by three presentations. And the session on translational research on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), was further developed by the contribution from Professor Kita's team.

12. "Current situation on H. pylori and gastric cancer in Rwanda" - Dr. Constance Mukabatsinda (Head of Endoscopy Unit, Department of Internal Medicine, University Teaching Hospital of Kigali)
13. "Current status on Gastric cancer and H. pylori infection in DR Congo" - Dr. Antoine Tshimpi (Gastroenterology Service, Department of Internal Medicine University of Kinshasa) and Dr. Pascal Tshiamala (Astry Hospitals, Kinshasa)
Following the presentations, Professor Yamaoka thanked participants for making the meeting successful and addressed the hope of fruitful projects joining Japanese and African researcher teams through Asia-Africa research platform in near future.
